Stepping Stones and Hierarchies

February 1, 2019 by Marla Genova 28 0 0

I lived my life feeling overly anxious for many years, too caught up in the cycle of fear to do anything about it. Living a self-limited life. Until the pain of staying where I was, the avoidance and self-induced guilt of not trying to change...

  • Thoughts?
  • Are you overwhelmed by all the resources out there and don't know where to begin? Or where to look for a loved one?⁣
⁣
I will save you hours of time by consulting with my connections and conducting advanced searches for resources in your local community. ⁣
⁣
I've been researching the best ones for over 20 years, in my personal and professional life.⁣
⁣
I’ll share what I learned by having worked with hundreds of people with social anxiety and/or public speaking fear. ⁣
⁣
I recognize that everyone has different types (generalized, non-generalized, overlap), and have learned what helps and hinders them. ⁣
⁣
Let’s connect! Marla@SupportForSocialAnxiety.com ⁣
  • My setback last month was awful and took me by surprise. I got out of the routine of practicing my social and speaking anxiety maintenance at the end of last year due to circumstances that needed my attention more. ⁣
⁣
It hit me hard the first week of January. I initially kept questioning - how is my anxiety still here after all my hard work and recovery? ⁣
⁣
Although it was a fraction of the anxiety I used to feel at my worst, it really jolted me. I hadn’t experienced anxiety sensations like that in many years. ⁣
⁣
I have all the tools, why couldn’t I practice what I preach? ⁣
⁣
Then, I gradually started to practice acceptance. Those old automatic negative thoughts came flooding back last month - as I hosted support and networking groups, attended an all day networking event - as I did simple daily routines and more challenging things. ⁣
⁣
I thanked those old, familiar thoughts for stopping by to check in and told them I don’t need them to try to protect me anymore. ⁣
They didn’t overstay their welcome... Just long enough to remind me just how far I’ve come. ⁣
  • Do you remember this sentence completion task?
⁣
“Someday I would like to _____.” ⁣
⁣
My answer: to be fearless!⁣⁣
⁣ ⁣⁣
While everyone else probably completed that statement with a dream, a goal, or a wish to win the lottery, my focus was on alleviating this life-consuming anxiety. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
That’s when I knew something was wrong :( ⁣⁣
⁣More to the story on my website - link in bio. ⁣
⁣
But for the first time in that class, I learned about anxiety disorders and panic attacks ... and thought that maybe I wasn’t the only one going through unbearable anxiety, maybe I wasn’t so different than everyone else after all. ⁣⁣
⁣
When did you realize you weren’t alone in this?⁣
  • No one else has walked in your shoes. Your experiences are completely unique. ⁣
⁣
People tend to believe that a beautiful life is one without hardships. The truth is, though, that struggles enhance life’s beauty.
  • Our fear can teach us many valuable lessons:⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
•	Learn to treat ourselves with kindness and compassion when we experience our human vulnerability rather than shun that part of ourselves and feel shame and embarrassment ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
•	Learn not to react so strongly to our uncomfortable feelings and sensations, which helps us to not feel overcome or overpowered by our fear ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
•	Shift our focus on being more concerned about others and how we can best serve them when we are speaking or socializing in our communities. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
When we shift our focus, we feel more connected to others, more grounded in our purpose for speaking or socializing, and less self-preoccupied and self-conscious. ⁣⁣ ⁣
⁣
When we’re willing to face our fear, and learn to work with fear rather than fight against it, our fear can teach us many important life lessons. ⁣⁣⁣
